Why is there so much empty space on my website?

A common question when people see their new site: "There's heaps of room there, can we fit more in?" The empty space is actually doing a job. Designers call it white space, and it's one of the reasons your site looks professional.
Space makes things easier to read
A page crammed with text and pictures is tiring to look at, so people give up and leave. Space around each section lets the eye rest and makes it obvious where one idea ends and the next begins.
Space makes things stand out
A button or headline surrounded by space gets noticed. The same button squeezed between six other things disappears. We use space to point people at what matters.
Space looks more trustworthy
Think of a cluttered shop window compared with a neat one. Clean, uncluttered websites tend to feel more professional and more established, which is exactly the impression you want before someone lets you into their home.
It's even more important on a phone
On a small screen, crowded layouts are hard to tap and hard to read. Spacing things out means fingers hit the right button and people don't have to zoom.
