7 signs your website is costing you customers

By Max & Daniel · Updated 23 September 2026

Most customers check your website before they call. If it looks old, loads slowly or makes them hunt for your number, many will simply go to the next business on Google. Here are seven signs your website is working against you.

1. It's slow on a phone

Most of your visitors are on their phone, often on mobile data. If your site takes more than a few seconds to load, many will give up before they see anything. Open it on your own phone, away from Wi-Fi, and time it.

2. It doesn't work properly on mobile

Tiny text, buttons too close together, or having to pinch and zoom are all signs of a site built for desktops. Google also ranks mobile-friendly sites higher.

3. Your phone number is hard to find

If a customer is ready to call, they shouldn't have to look for your number. It should be at the top of every page, and tapping it should start a call.

4. It looks out of date

Old designs, a copyright date from years ago or last season's specials tell visitors you might not be around any more. People judge your business by your website, fairly or not.

5. It doesn't say what you do and where

Within a few seconds, a visitor should know what you do, where you work and how to contact you. If your homepage opens with a vague slogan, you're making them work too hard.

6. There's no proof you're good

Reviews, photos of real jobs and examples of your work are what turn a visitor into a caller. Stock photos and no testimonials make people hesitate.

7. You don't show up on Google

Search for your trade and your suburb. If you're not on the first page, most customers will never see your site at all. Good page titles, local content and a Google Business Profile all help.

How many did you tick?

If it's more than one or two, your website is probably costing you work. The good news is that it doesn't take an agency budget to fix.
